INTRO:
What does mindfulness refer to? How it influences our mental health and wellbeing ? And what are its fundamentals ?
This is what we will discuss in this episode. Welcome to minutes of facts podcast.
WHAT is mindfulness ?
Do you know that we spend about 47% of our waking hours thinking about something other than what we are doing.
That why, Mindfulness tend for the act of paying attention on purpose to all elements of our experience with an attitude of open acceptance, non judgement and compassion.
So here we are insisting on tree failures:
- Be held on purpose
- Be in the present experience
- Think without judgement
Being more mindful serves to change how you experience your thoughts and feelings; instead of just reacting
Learning how to live more mindfully helps you to hit the pause button so that you can respond in a more considered way
It doesn’t mean you don’t have thoughts or feelings at all (good luck trying to make your brain go completely quiet for more than a few moments!);
what it does involve is observing your thoughts and feelings without judgement and without allowing yourself to be controlled by them.
WHY is mindfulness good for your mental health and wellbeing ?
According to the UK’s Mental Health Foundation:
“Practising mindfulness can give more insight into emotions, boost attention and concentration, and improve relationships. It is recommended by [the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence] as a preventative practice for people with experience of recurrent depression.”
SANE Australia also noted that:
“Mindfulness can help reduce stress, boost creativity, [and] improve working-memory… [it can also] help manage depression, anxiety, chronic pain, suicidal ideation, addiction recovery and relapse prevention and eating disorders.”
Mindfulness Fundamentals:
- Suspension of judgement: stay open and witness to any experience in your life with acceptance and open heart
- Patience: it is about self compassion to our awareness and trusting the process concerning our own evolution or anything else.
- Beginner’s mind: Drop preconceived ideas and meet each moment with clear eyes, opens and curiosity.
- Trust: Trust intelligence, feedback from heart and true intentions. Believe in your own intuition, authority, and inherent goodness to live with authenticity.
- Non striving mind: Striving can be a real hurdle. When we focus on a product we are attracting to an outcome, and subsequently creating the conditions for suffering to arise. So, Stop being driven by your desires.
- Acceptance: see things as it actually is. Don’t be in a war with your reality.
- Letting go: everything that has a beginning has an end. Make peace with that and all will be well.
